PATHANAMTHITTA: Communist Party of India (CPI) State committee member P. Prasad on Saturday stressed the need to promote sustainable development initiatives. He was delivering the keynote address at a `Development seminar' held as part of the district meeting of the All-India Youth Federation at Mallappally. The CPI was not against development, but was opposed to `anti-nature' activities in the name of development. Large-scale conversion of paddy fields had taken place in different parts of the district, in disregard of its harmful effect such as waterlogging, and pollution and drying up of wells and other water sources. The conversion of paddy fields should have been carried out on the basis of proper environment-impact studies and all possible measures to minimise its impact on nature. MLAs Joseph M. Puthusserry and K.C. Rajagopal, AIYF district president Manoj Charalel and secretary A.M. Aji, and Kerala Congress(Joseph) State secretary Kunju Koshy Paul spoke. CPI State committee member K.R. Chandramohan inaugurated the delegates' session. The AIYF district meet will come to a close on Sunday.
