REASON TO SMILE: Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran (second from right) and Electricity Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy handing over a colour TV set to a beneficiary at Kotturpuram in Chennai on Saturday.
CHENNAI: Over 1,500 television sets were distributed to Kotturpuram and Purasawalkam residents as part of the State Government's free colour television sets for the poor scheme here on Saturday. Five counters were set up at government schools for the distribution. Residents were given tokens on production of proof of residence. Distribution was completed at Purasawalkam (Pachaikal Veerasamy SlumClearance Board), where 876 families received the sets. The distribution of the total 30 lakh television sets all over the State would be completed in phases to follow. Union Information Technology and Communications Minister Dayanidhi Maran said Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi accomplished in two months what the Centre did in two years. He also hailed the State Government's two-acre land scheme for the poor (to be launched by the Chief Minister in Tiruvallur district on Sunday, marking Periayar's birth anniversary), financial assistance to those registered at the employment exchange (to be launched on October 2, marking Gandhi Jayanthi) and distribution of free gas stoves (launch on Pongal Day). Electricity and Rural Industries Minister Arcot N. Veerasamy, in-charge of Chennai District, oversaw the distribution at Kotturpuram Housing Board colony.
