HASSAN: Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna turned his attention to solving the problems being faced by residents of Hassan city.On Saturday, he conducted a meeting of officials of the City Municipal Corporation and the Hassan Urban Development Authority. People complained to him about the poor maintenance of roads and drainages, irregular supply of drinking water and defective streetlights. Though he planned to visit various localities in the city along with officials, he cancelled it as he reportedly had other matters to address to. He discussed the lack of basic infrastructure in the city with the officials and directed them to gather information on the specific problems of people in all 35 wards and draw a proposal, which would be forwarded to the Department of Municipal Administration. Mr. Revanna directed the authorities to prepare an integrated plan for the development of city. He said funds were not an issue and he would urge the Chief Minister to release funds to take up development works. Mr. Revanna visited Kattinakere Market and the old CMC office and directed the authorities to demolish the old building and construct a commercial complex there. About complaints from residents on harassment by officials in issuing "khatas", he gave the officials ten days to sort out the issue. Speaking to presspersons, he said Deputy Commissioner K.H. Ashwathanarayana Gowda, who is administrator of Hassan CMC, had been directed to form a task force committee to look into the unauthorised occupation of public property in the city and to take steps to clear encroachments. There was a plan to open an office, combining five wards, to facilitate payment of water and property tax. The Commissioner, Hassan Urban Development Authority (HUDA), had been directed to allot sites to auto and car drivers, class IV employees in various institutions and those depending on small business in S.M. Krishna Nagar extension at a nominal price. When asked about the Rs. 808.50-crore proposal submitted by Hassan City Municipal Council to the Centre for the integrated development of the city under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), he said he had met Union Minister for Urban Development Jayapal Reddy and apprised him on the need to sanction the proposal, in view of fast growth of the city. "Mr. Reddy promised to consider the proposal," he added. Mr. Revanna directed Deputy Commissioner, Deputy Director of Food and Civil Supplies, Chief Executive Officer Hassan Zilla Panchayat and tahsildars of eight taluks to expedite the process of issuing below poverty line (BPL) cards to eligible beneficiaries before October 2. Presiding over a meeting convened to review the progress of development works here on Saturday, he directed the authorities to publish the list of beneficiaries in the notice boards of anganwadis, schools and colleges and provide time for people to file complaints and requests on the discrepancies and expedite the process of issuing cards to the satisfaction of the people.
