Kundu impresses

CHENNAI: After another day of bone crunching blocks and kicks, the participants from northeastern States continued to dominate in the senior National taekwondo championship at the Nehru indoor stadium on Saturday.

Among the winners, Sandeep Kundu of Haryana, a SAF Games bronze medallist impressed in the middleweight category as he fought his way to gold. For host Tamil Nadu, B. Pandiammal of Chennai Police and K. Malini Devi, a plus two student of Good Shepherd, won a bronze each in the women's section to bring some joy. A junior champion last year, it was the first foray into the senior ranks for Malini. With just one day's proceedings remaining, CRPF with 56 points is in lead in the overall championship table followed by Manipur (45) and Karnataka (41).

Women: Finweight: 1. T. Sunita Devi; 2. S. Geetarani Devi (CRPF); 3. R. Remya (Ker) and Jyoti Walanjkar (MP); Middleweight: 1. M. Somorani Devi (CRPF); 2. Rashmi Chouhan (MP); 3. Pandiammal (TN) and S. Aruna Devi (J&K); Welterweight: 1. Sonam Rajpur (Del); 2. R.K. Diana Devi (Mani); 3. Rashmi R. Naik (Goa) and K. Malini Devi (TN).
