Govt. MC triumphs

Government Medical College, Tirunelveli lifted the India Cements Trophy defeating St. John's College, Palayamkottai by one run in the final of the Tirunelveli District Colleges cricket tournament at the Sankar School ground, Sankarnagar, on Saturday.

The scores: GMC 221 for eight in 40 overs (Prince 55) bt St. John's College 220 all out in 36.2 overs (Rajadurai 72).

Big win for Karnataka

Karnataka blanked Pondicherry 14-0 in the South Zone sub-junior football championship organised by the Kanyakumari DFA at the Anna Stadium, Nagercoil on Saturday. P. Deepak (5), Sanjukumar (3), Manimaran (2), J. Praveen (2), Vishalkumar and S. Amarnath were the scorers.

Scott Christian reigns

Last year's runner-up Scott Christian College, Nagercoil toppled the host and defending champion, St. Xavier's College, Palayamkottai 72-62 in the final of the Manonmaniam Sundaranar University inter-collegiate basketball tournament at Palayamkottai on Friday.

The scores: Final: Scott Christian 72 (Antony 24, Jebarson 18) bt St. Xavier's 62 (Socrates18, Prabu 14). Third place: VOC College,Tuticorin bt MDT Hindu College, Tirunelveli 51-32.

South Zone Police wins

Three goals by Krishnamurthy helped South Zone Police post an emphatic 5-1 victory over Usilai Soccer Club in the Madurai District Football Association `A' division league for the Hi-Tech Arai Trophy at Madura College ground on Saturday. Velmurugan and Ravichandran also found the net for the winner. Veerakumar reduced the margin for Usilai SC.

Strength building meet

The eighth senior National open Strength Building championship for men, organised by the Kanyakumari DSBA will get under way at the Kalaivanar Kalaiarangam in Nagercoil on Saturday.

More than 150 participants from Punjab, Haryana, HP, Delhi, Gujarat, Kerala and Tamil Nadu will take part in the event.
