Reshma wins cadet title

KOZHIKODE: Reshma Susan of Ernakulam defeated Serha Jacob of Alappuzha 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8 to clinch the cadet girls' singles title in the KDTTA all-Kerala ranking table tennis tournament at the V.K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium here on Saturday.

The results:

Boys: Mini cadet (final): Nithin (Pkd) bt Albin Baby (Wyd) 11-2, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8. Semifinals: Nithin bt Ajay Krishnan (Wyd) 11-6, 11-5, 11-8; Albin bt Rohith Binu Mathew (Alp) 11-6, 11-5, 11-9.

Girls: Cadet (final): Reshma Susan (Ekm) bt Serha Jacob (Alp) 9-11, 11-9, 11-9, 11-8. Semifinals: Reshma bt G. Gayatri (Ekm) 11-5, 11-1, 11-4; Serha bt Maria Rony (Alp) 17-15, 11-6, 11-8. Mini cadet (final): Maria Rony (Alp) bt Serha Jacob 5-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-4, 11-3. Semifinals: Maria bt Riya Sara Thomas (Ekm) 11-7, 8-11, 11-4, 10-12, 11-9; Serha bt Riya Chacko (Ekm) 11-2, 11-5.

FIDE-rating tournament

Around 300 players are expected to compete in the All-India Fide rating open chess tournament to be held at the V.K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium here from September 18 to 23. "There would be around 200 rated players, including International Masters," said P. Venugopalan, organising secretary of the tournament at a press meet here on Saturday.

M. Bhaskaran, Kozhikode Corporation Mayor and chairman of the tournament's organising committee, who also spoke at the press conference, expressed hope that the event would revive chess in the city. "It would also be a good opportunity for the local players to improve their game," he said.

The Rs. 70,000 tourney will be played over ten Swiss rounds. — Principal Correspondent
