Villagers attack police

VILLUPURAM: The police have booked cases against residents of Kosapadi village in Sankarapuram block on charges of assaulting them and causing injuries.

When the villagers attempted to block the entry of Dalits and activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) into the Chembiamman temple, the police intervened. The villagers pelted the police with stones and in the scuffle a Sub-Inspector and five policemen were injured.

The trouble arose when the Dalits tried to enter the chavadi area where the idols and other puja articles were kept. — Special Correspondent

Gajurel to be released on Monday

CHENNAI: The Nepalese Maoist leader, Chandra Prakash Gajurel, who is in jail since August 2003, is to be released from the Chennai Central Prison on Monday.

Mr. Gajurel was first arrested by State police on August 21, 2003 at Chennai Airport for having furnished false information and attempting to leave for London. He was detained under the National Security Act on September 19, 2005. While Mr. Gajurel was found guilty by the Judicial Magistrate Court in Alandur and sentenced to three-year imprisonment in the Passport Act case, his detention under the NSA was upheld by the High Court early this year. The Maoist leader did not challenge both the orders. While he had already undergone the three-year jail term in the first case, the NSA detention period is coming to an end on September 18.

The Foreigners Act empowers the Government to restrict his movements within the country by lodging him in a special camp, such as the one functioning near Chengalpattu. — Special Correspondent

CITU leader dead

CHENNAI: R.S. Rajendran, State secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions and Dindigul district CITU president, died at Dindigul on Friday night. He was 54. The State committee of the CITU expressed shock over the death of Mr. Rajendran. — Special Correspondent

JIPMER staff meet Jayalalithaa

CHENNAI: Representatives of the JIPMER Staff Struggle Committee on Saturday called on general secretary of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) Jayalalithaa and sought her support to their agitation. The AIADMK headquarters, in its release said Ms.Jayalalithaa had assured them of assistance. — Special Correspondent

Seminar on public health issues

CHENNAI: Newer community health threats such as viral infections, drug resistance in the community and preventive medicine will be the focus of a seminar IMPACT 2006 on current public health issues here on September 23.

"Navarathri Holiday Special"

CHENNAI: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation is operating "Navarathri Holiday Special" to Delhi, Agra, Amritsar and Chandigarh with optional extension to Kullu and Manali by road.

The full-length train is to depart from Madurai on September 22 via Tiruchi, Villupuram, and Chennai where the tourists can board the train. AIADMK demonstration

TIRUNELVELI: The All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam cadres, led by former minister, Nainar Nagendran, staged a demonstration at Tirunelveli junction on Saturday evening, condemning the "State Government's inability to effectively combat Chikungunya". The Mayor, A. Jayarani, the Tirunelveli City secretary, Sudha K. Paramasivan, former Tirunelveli City presidium chairman, Muthukaruppan, former MP, S. Murugesan, K.M.A. Nizam of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and others participated.

Two held for poaching wild boar

Nagercoil: The Forest Department officials arrested two persons on Friday on charges of poaching wild boar from forest areas of Alagiyapandipuram in Kanyakumari district recently.

According to police sources, a team of forest officials caught the duo - Paulraj and his son Nagappan while they were preparing the boar meat in a pot at a house near Thomaiyapuram. Cases have been filed against the duo under the Wild Life Protection Act 1972.

NCC cadets' rally

KARAIKUDI: Commodore V.M. Chitnivas, Deputy Director General, National Cadets Corps, visited 9 (TN) Battalion NCC here on Thursday. Col. T.M. Shanmugam, Group Commander, Tiruchi, accompanied him.

Mr. Chitnivas flagged a rally of the cadets of Alagappa Government Arts College, Karaikudi to create AIDS awareness among the people. He also planted a sapling at Iluppakudi. Col. T.V. Sashimohanan, Commanding Officer, Major S.P. Sathiavageesan, Captain A. Gurusamy, Associate NCC Officer, Mathew, Subedar Major, A.F.A. Two killed in accident

ERODE: Two persons proceeding to Perundurai on a motorcycle were killed in a road accident on Friday evening. According to the police, Siva (28), a barber and his friend Angusamy (30), working in a textile shop, belonging to Perundurai came to Erode and while returning met with an accident.

When they came near Thindal Vidyanagar Junction, a private bus proceeding to Erode from Perundurai collided with the motorcycle. While Siva was crushed to death on the spot, Angusamy died on the way to hospital. The Erode Taluk police are investigating.

Lorries stop plying to Kerala

ERODE: More than 200 lorries were stranded at the Erode Lorry Stand at Municipal VOC Park in protest against the decision of the Kerala Government to make speed governors compulsory in the vehicles operated in that State.

Every day about 200 lorries leave for Kerala with items worth about Rs. 1 crore. Opposing the order, the lorry owners stopped operation of vehicles to that State from Friday.

Warning against child labour

PUDUKOTTAI: The Collector, S. J. Chiru, has warned business houses and other concerns employing children below 14 years of age with stringent action under the Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act 1986.

A statement issued by the Collector on Saturday said the Union Ministry of Labour and Employment has notified in its Gazette that employment of children below 14 years of age are prohibited with effect from Oct. 10 under the above Act.

Science exhibitions

Tiruchi: The Tamil Nadu Science Forum will hold district-level science exhibitions for college and school students in Tiruchi on October 7 and 8.

The exhibitions were being organised as part of the series of programmes organised on the topic of `Appreciation of Physics in Everyday Life.' Students of standards IX, X, XI and XII would be eligible for participating in the exhibition for schools. Nominated to Senate

Tiruchi: The Head of the Department of Geology of the Bharathidasan University, M. Manivel, has been nominated as a member of the Senate of the University of Madras by the Governor and Chancellor Surjit Singh Barnala.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level at the Mettur dam stood at 108.92 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Saturday. The inflow was 6,558 cusecs and the outflow, 17,987 cusecs. — Staff Reporter
