K.S. Hegde Club pips IBBC

BANGALORE: K.S. Hegde Club, Mangalore scored a hard-fought 64-61 victory over Indira Nagar Basketball Club and entered the `C' division championship final at Sree Kanteerava Stadium courts here on Saturday. At half-time the winner led 29-25.

Nitin Shetty (19 points) and Arvind (18) played well for the Mangalore team, while Naveen (21 ) and Shivaraj Kumar (20), put up a fine display for IBBC.

K.S. Hegde Club will meet Dr. Ambedkar BC which beat Southern Blues 67-47 after leading 37-25 at the half-time, in the other semifinals. Nikith dazzled for Dr. Ambedkar BC, scoring 25 points. Both K.S. Hegde Club and Dr. Ambedkar, by the virtue of entering the title round, have been promoted to `B' division.

The results (semifinals): K.S. Hegde BC, Mangalore (Nitin Shetty 19, Arvind 18) bt IBBC 61 ( Naveen 21, Shivaraj Kumar 20). Ambedkar BC 67 (Nikith 25, Karan Sood 10) bt Southern Blues 47 (Shylendra 20, Mohan Kumr10).

Narrow win for Seshadripuram College

Seshadripuram College scored a narrow 9-8 win over Dharwad Sports Club in the men's section of the State netball league championship on Saturday. In another tie, Young rangers defeated Southern Blues 24-15.

In the women's section, Vasavi College met with mixed fortunes. It beat Maharanis's Arts College 12-7, but lost to MLA First Grade College 8-12.

The results:

Men: Sesshadripuram College bt Dharwad SC 9-8; Young Rangers bt Southern Blues 24-15; Siddaganga SC bt Jupiter SC 17-9; Kolar SC bt Vidyaniketan SC 19-12.

Women: MLA First Grade College bt Vasavi College 12-8 ; Vasavi College bt Maharanis Arts College 12-7.

Felicitation function

Shree Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain College will honour its sports achievers at a felicitation function at the College on September 18. The institution on its rolls, has several outstanding national and international-level sportspersons.

Among those to be honoured are cue ace Pankaj Advani, Swimming champion Shikha Tandon, Rehan Poncha, Rohit Hawaldar (swimming), Robin Uthappa, Gaurav Dhiman, Ganesh Satish, Karuna Jain (cricket), Arjun Goutham, N. Kiran, Asha Nnandakumar (tennis), Abantika Deka (badminton), Harirpasad (hockey) and R. Kaushik (basketball).

DAC week-end meet

Deccan Ahtletic Club's weekend meet, which is being sponsored by Deccan Herald and Prajavani Group, will be conducted at Sree Kanteerava Stadium on Sunday, according to a press release of the DAC.

Chess tournament

Karnataka Academy of Chess will conduct Ramakrishna memorial rapid chess tournament on September 23 and 24 at the State Youth Centre in Bangalore. Entries close on September 22. Further details may be had from R. Hanumantha (Moible: 99451-90200) or Mahadevappa (99450-12623).

Linge Gowda passes away

T.G. Linge Gowda, the former kabaddi coach of the State Police and former chairman of Karnataka Rajya Amateur Kabaddi Association's Referees Board, passed away in Bangalore on Saturday after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. KRAKA, in a message, condoled his demise.
