TDP will regain past glory: Yerrannaidu

Special Correspondent

Congress accused of failing to fulfill poll promises

ONGOLE: Telugu Desam Parliamentary Party leader K. Yerrannaidu has exhorted party workers not to lose heart over defeat in local body elections and enthused them saying that the party will come back to power in the State and steer national politics once again reviving its glory.

Addressing the general body meeting of the district TDP here on Saturday, Mr. Yerrannaidu asked the Congress not to tick off the Opposition party in the State just because it had lost one election. It should remember that the TDP ruled the State for 17 years in the last 24 years. He pointed out that the Congress faced more humiliating defeat in 1994 when it could not even get the Opposition party status.

The BJP, which had only two members in the Lok Sabha in 1984, came to power 12 years later. It was common for political parties to win or lose elections, he said.

Dig at YSR

He came down heavily on the Congress Government in the State saying that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy was ruling it as his `jagir' or private estate without following any rule of law. The High Court and the Supreme Court had to admonish the Government 23 times in the last two years on various issues including Gowru Venkata Reddy case or enrolment of voters in local body elections.

He said the Congress came to power by making several false promises and failed to keep any of them till now. It promised to complete 28 irrigation projects in five years and eight projects in two years to provide irrigation to 16 lakh acres. It now promises to provide irrigation only to seven lakh acres that too by February next. It would take 30 years for the Congress to fulfil all its promises, he said.

He said the Congress came to power with the help of CPI (Maoist), TRS and Left parties but antagonised all of them now. While Maharastra got a special package for development of Vidarbha from the Central Government, Andhra Pradesh failed to get a similar package for Telangana, he charged.

Former minister Ashok Gajapati Raju and party leader N. Rajakumari also spoke.

Addanki MLA and TDP district president Karanam Balaramakrishna Murthi said the party lost the local body elections mainly due to foul tactics of the Congress in enrolling bogus voters and deleting TDP votes.

Significantly, leaders at the meeting admitted that the party faced rout as it had neglected workers.
