Weeklong campaign ends with `awareness walk'

CHENNAI: A weeklong cancer awareness campaign conducted by the final year Public Relations course students of MOP Vaishnav College ended here on Saturday with an `awareness walk'.

Members of the college's Rotaract Club of the NSS unit organised the walk, which began at the Light House and ended at the Labour Statue along the Marina.

Actor Jeeva flagged off the walk and joined the participants till the finishing point.

The other special invitees were, Dr. Ravikannan, Chief Oncologist, Adyar Cancer Institute; Raja Hussain, NSS coordinator, the University of Madras; and RJ Gobinath of Radio City 105.8 FM. More than 500 students took part in the effort to wipe away myths about cancer and enlighten people on the risk factors and symptoms of various cancers.

Ravi Katari, president of the Rotary Club of Madras, inaugurated the campaign on Monday. The social awareness programme was organised in association with the Adyar Cancer Institute and Rotary Club.

This year, the students concentrated on cervical cancer, oral cancer, oesophageal cancer, lung cancer and leukaemia, and targeted audiences ranging from corporation schools, private schools, women's colleges and men's colleges in the city.

The students produced documentaries and short films supporting the cause, which were screened for the target audience. The various other tools employed included posters, banners, brochures, pamphlets, danglers, and badges.

Radio City 105.8 FM and MOP FM 91.2 were airing cancer-related messages for the whole week, and helped the students reach a wider audience.
