Water meter network to be modernised

Automatic meter reading system will track all irregularities

  • Meter reading device will be fitted to existing meters and monitored through remote system
  • System ensures transparency in billing, prevents manipulation by field staff

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Metro Water Supply and Sewerage Board is soon coming out with a state-of-the-art `automatic meter reading' function on its network to monitor water flow, volume, consumption and billing patterns in households.

The system would be linked to a central server, where consumption and revenue patterns of any household can be known at the click of the `mouse'. The effort apparently is to bridge the glaring gap between supply and revenue inflow, which has been the bane of the water board.

    Pilot launch

To begin with, the concept will be experimented with nearly 100 connections in the bulk consumer and multi-storied buildings segments, which account for 7,700 connections in all, in a pilot study to be launched shortly.

Automated meter reading devices would be fitted to the existing meters and monitored like it is being done in Delhi and Mumbai successfully. "It ensures transparency of consumption and billing processes, prevents manipulation of data by field staff and helps to constantly track revenue goals online," explained HMWSSB Managing Director K.S. Jawahar Reddy.

AMR is a remote-controlled device that collects meter reading and uploads it into the company billing servers automatically.Once successful, the AMRs are to be installed in all water filling stations of the water board too to keep track of water being transported in tankers to different localities.
