HYDERABAD: Three motorcycle-borne assailants hacked to death a leader of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM) Afsar Nawab, 45, near Gandhi statue in Amberpet during daytime on Saturday. The gruesome killing on the main road triggered panic with traders downing shutters and the MIM workers observing bandh in the area. Convenor of the MIM Himayathangar constituency, Nawab, was travelling in his Toyota Qualis when he stopped by at a pan shop to buy gutkha. Police said the three assailants lay in wait at the pan shop since Nawab used to regularly stop there. As soon as he collected his gutkha and was going towards the vehicle, the three youngsters lunged at him with daggers and swords. They hacked him to death even as passers-by watched in terror before riding off on a bike. Tension of retaliation gripped the locality with a large number of MIM activists assembling at the scene of offence. MIM MLAs Akbaruddin Owaisi, Mumtaz Khan, Afsar Khan and Syed Ahmed Pasha Quadri visited the spot.
