Coimbatore: As many as 380 refugees belonging to 100 families from Sri Lanka arrived in the city from Rameswaram on Saturday. The district has nine camps providing shelter to about 850 refugees. As the influx of refugees has increased sharply, the Government has started accommodating them in various refugee camps across the State. Hence, 380 of them, who expressed interest to stay in Coimbatore, were sent by buses on Friday night. On arrival, they were accommodated at a Corporation marriage hall in Kamarajapuram near Kikani School. The district administration is making arrangements for accommodating them in the camps in the district. Monetary and material assistance were being arranged for them. Preparation of identity cards to the refugees is under way. To prevent infiltration of militants in the name of refugees, the temporary shelter and all the refugee camps in the district are brought under tight police vigil in general and Q branch police in particular.
