KARUR: Taking cognisance of the growing influence of Karur-based industries in the domestic and international markets, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) plans to carve out a new zone exclusively for Karur, from the Tiruchi zone. "The CII could play the role of a catalyst in helping the textile industries here achieve the targeted Rs. 10,000-crore turnover by the year 2010," observes the chairman, CII Tiruchi zone, B.V. Ramanan. Besides, the other major industries such as bus body building, agriculture, educational institutions and tourism, could benefit from an association with the CII. Mr. Ramanan was speaking on the sidelines of a CII road show here on Saturday. Concepts such as cluster development and creating a special economic zone for textile exporters could be pursued with vigour with CII-backing, exporters here aver. Merely creating a buyer-base would not suffice to achieve the Rs. 10,000 crore target, points out the secretary, Karur Textile Manufacturers Exporters' Association (KTMEA), S. Susindran. Networking should be done, for which an exclusive CII zone would be of great help. It would be a win-win situation then. Welcoming the initiative, the KTMEA president, V. Kumar, observes that closer interaction with the CII would bestow a slew of indirect benefits to exporters and industrialists in Karur. CII sources say that a minimum of 50 members could easily be enrolled in the next couple of months. As the numbers grow, an exclusive secretariat could be established. The CII Tiruchi zone has around 80 members and the industry-intensive Karur could match that in quick time is the assessment here.
