Mainline vessel calls at Kochi port for servicing

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: MV Ville De Mars has called at Kochi, becoming the first mainline vessel to do so, realising a long-time dream of the Cochin Port Trust to service such ships.

The vessel arrived here directly from Bandar Abbas Port, Iran, on Friday and left for Port Kelang, Malaysia, on Saturday.

The crossed another milestone in becoming the maritime gateway to India by receiving the mainline vessel, said a press release from the trust here.

MV Ville De Mars is a container vessel of Panama flag in the category of mother ships and is owned and operated by the mainline operator CMA-CGM. The vessel has a capacity of 2,935 TEUs. The port achieved the status of a deep-draught port in February this year. This has enabled it to handle bigger vessels in the recent months. Further, the port has announced 50 per cent concession on vessel-related charges for mainline vessels of gross registered tonnage of 25,000 and above and having capacities of 2,500 TEUs or more.

The concessions were announced for achieving direct connectivity to ports in the U.S., Europe and the Far East. Such direct sailings eliminate transhipment of containers from here through other hub ports.
