BPCL workers firm on strike plan

KOCHI: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (BPCL) workers, under the all-India marketing set up at Kochi, Mumbai and Numaligarh refineries, have decided to go ahead with their strike on Tuesday and Wednesday in protest against the management distributing bonus at lower rates, said a press release from the Petroleum Employees' Association here. The strike call has been given by employees under 20 trade unions, said the press release. The employees were going ahead with the strike as conciliatory talks failed, the release added. It also warned that the two-day strike would affect the all-India marketing and refining operations of the BPCL. Considering the importance of the oil sector, the Labour Commissioner had promised efforts till the last minute to avert the strike.

Meanwhile, Kochi Refineries Workers' Union has said that the Regional Labour Commissioner in Kochi would hold discussions with the union's president and Minister for Water Resources N.K. Premachandran, on Monday. If the negotiations failed the Union would join the strike.
