TIRUNELVELI : Distribution of two acres of land to landless small and marginal farmers and farm labourers commenced here on Sunday, in which 1,052 beneficiaries received Rs.1.01-crore land. The Minister for Social Welfare Poongothai Aladi Aruna handed over the documents of the land, comprising 747.50 acres of government dry land, 119.14 acres of encroached government dry land and 134.29 acres of patta dry land, to the beneficiaries at a function at Palayamkottai on Sunday. The beneficiaries are from Scheduled Caste (285), Most Backward (384) Backward (342) and other communities (41). To ensure smooth distribution of land, the district administration identified 3,107 acres of government dry land, 431.98 acres of government dry land under encroachment and 90,823.47 acres of patta dry land in the district, which would be made cultivable by the Department of Agricultural Engineering, the Department Agriculture and the Department of Horticulture. These departments would jointly examine the quality and nature of the soil in the land identified for distribution and give a detailed account of the land to the beneficiaries so that choosing the right crop and cultivating it at the right time would be easy for the farmer. Collector G. Prakash, MPs, V. Radhika Selvi of Tiruchendur and M. Appadurai of Tenkasi, the MLAs, V. Karuppasamy Pandian of Tenkasi, S. Peter Alphonse of Kadayanallur, M. Appavu of Radhapuram, H. Vasanthakumar of Nanguneri and N. Maalairaja of Tirunelveli spoke. In a function organised at Kovilpatti in Tuticorin district, the Minister for Animal Husbandry, Geetha Jeevan, distributed land to 788 beneficiaries. The land comprised 299.81 acres of government dry land, 120.58 acres of encroached government dry land and 892.54 acres of patta dry land.
