Local people foil bid to abduct man

KOLLAM: An attempt by a gang to abduct a man carrying Rs.4 lakh in cash was foiled by locals at Pazhayattinkuzhi junction in the city early on Sunday morning.

The locals not only rescued the man, but also nabbed one person from the gang who held a revolver. Both were handed over to the Kollam East Police.

The police said that Rasheed, 21, was carrying hawala money to be delivered to someone in Kollam.

As soon as he alighted from a bus at Pazhayattinkuzhi junction, on the National Highway, a gang of eight men in a Scorpio van accosted him. The gang then tried to abduct Rasheed by forcing him into the van. A group of locals who were witnessing this soon rushed to the van and objected to the attempts of those in the van.

At this point, one of the gang members whipped out a revolver and threatened to open fire if the locals prevented them from abducting Rasheed. Taken aback, the locals stepped aside. Rasheed was then pushed into the van.

As the van started moving, some of the locals jumped in front of it demanding the release of the abducted man. This forced the gang to push Rasheed out and as the van was about to speed away, the locals grabbed the gang member who held the revolver.

They then seized the revolver from him and informed the police.

The police said the revolver was loaded and gave the identity of the gang member as Manoj, 25, a native of Thrissur. Others in van managed to escape with the cash.

On interrogation, Manoj said the gang was following Rasheed since Saturday. The police registered a case.
