Octogenarian gives up fast for new rail line

Correspondent

Sequel to assurance by Pallamraju

Kakinada: The indefinite fast launched in front of the two town police station centre here on Sunday by S.S. Krishnaji, senior journalist and founder of AP Passengers' Association, to press for the early materialisation of the long-awaited demand for linking Kakinada to the railway mainline was called off within a few hours of commencing it following an assurance by Union Minister of State for Defence M.M. Pallamraju.

Mr. Krishnaji, an octogenarian, has been agitating for the cause for the past five decades. The Minister, who is in the city on an official visit, called on the fasting journalist and convinced him on the need to give up the fast, as the Railway Board and the Ministry seized of the matter. Stating that the Railway Board was of the opinion that the Kakinada-Pithapuram line that brings the city on the mainline was not viable, the Minister said that he was able to prevail upon it to have a fresh look in view of the changed scenario. The Railway Board was now on the job of fresh evaluation study and hopeful of a positive report, he added.

Discrimination

Mr. Pallamraju went to the extent of assuring him of launching fast along with him if he fails in his efforts.

While concurring with the view of Mr. Krishnaji that Andhra Pradesh was being subjected to gross discrimination regarding railways, Mr. Pallamraju said that all State MPs had already made it clear to the Railway Minister and insisted on early clearance of the Kakinada-Pithapuram line.
