Relief packages for Chittoor district demanded

Special Correspondent

Congress legislators meet the Chief Minister over the issue

TIRUPATI: For the second time in less than ten days a delegation of Congress legislators, including Kalicherla Prabhakar Reddy, Dr. Kuthuhalamma, Gali Muddukrishna Naidu, P. Ramachandra Reddy, M. Venkatramana and Narayanaswamy, from the drought-hit Chittoor district have taken a delegation to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy to seek his intervention on extending immediate relief and rehabilitation package to the district besides steps to contain the severe power crisis gripping the tail-end of the district.

The MLAs expressed concern that groundnut grown on seven lakh acres and paddy, cane, cereals etc cultivated on 50,000 ares during the khariff had withered away in the wake of the twin-problems of drought and power crisis.

They also complained that the low-voltage had already made a number of transformers and pump-sets go out of operation further compounding the farmers' woes.

Besides instructions to the APDCL to restore the burnt-out transformers, the legislators also urged the Chief Minister to extend to relief package of Rs.10 crores towards drinking water and Rs.5 crores towards fodder.

They also demanded for inputs subsidies and seed supply for the next crop.

A note released by the legislators said that the Chief Minister had promised immediate action to their demands.
