KHAMMAM: The Khammam and Dantewada police have stepped up joint operations and intensified surveillance along the possible routes of weapon supply for the Maoists. They are mainly focussing on towns like Bhadrachalam, Charla and Venkatapuram which are close to the border with Chhattisgarh. The Maoists, going all out against the State-sponsored Salva Judum campaign in Bastar region, particularly in Dantewada district, used to depend on these centres for arms supplies. The police had raided the godowns of some transport operators in the temple town in the wake of seizure of weapons at Mahabubnagar and Prakasam districts. Though they drew a blank in their week-long search operations, the police are not willing to rule out the possibility of supply of rocket launchers and shells to Maoists operating across the border. They could procure such weaponry from the nearest urban points in Malkangiri district of Orissa, an official said.
Vehicles checked
Vehicles bound for Bhadrachalam or Kunta (in Chhattisgarh) were being checked. The police were also investigating the records of long distance shipments delivered in local points recently. The Khamamm police are investigating into a blast triggered by the Moists near the Edulla Bayaram police station on July 28. The use of rocket launcher was suspected in the incident. The explosive, which landed about 700 metres from the Edulla Bayyaram police station left a tree partly burnt. The splinters of the explosive used in the incident were sent to forensic lab and report is awaited.
