Lessons from defeat

Lessons from defeat

The West Indies's win, even if by the Duckworth-Lewis rules in the second match of the DLF Cup cricket tri-series in Kuala Lumpur, has a couple of lessons for India. It is quick scoring in the first 10 or 15 overs that matter in one-dayers and also good fielding. Despite the loss for India, what heartened the cricket fans was Sachin Tendulkar's comeback.

Extra runs

In the 20 overs that India bowled against the West Indies in the rain-interrupted match, it conceded 26 runs as extras where as the West Indies conceded only 32 runs in 50 overs. Essentially that helped the West Indies to put up a good run rate and snatch victory.

Unfair

It is unfair to declare a team winner by the Duckworth-Lewis method. Cricket is a game of uncertainties. Just two days earlier to India's match, the West Indies had looked on course at 172 for two chasing Australia's target. Had rain intervened, the West Indies would have trooped out a winner but as it happened, nine wickets fell for just 29 runs and Australia was home comfortably.

Glaring deficiencies

It was disappointing to see India's dismal performance in the just concluded World Cup hockey at Monchengladbach in Germany. The innumerable number of penalty corners we conceded and the inability to hold on in the last few minutes of the match have been glaring deficiencies. When will we overcome this?

Well done Navratilova

Martina Navratilova left the tennis scene the way she wanted with another Grand Slam win — 59th in her career. She is one of the greats of the game and has earned the respect of every sportsperson.

Amazing athlete

It was nice to see Leander Paes come back with a bang winning the U.S. Open men's doubles title. What an amazing athlete Leander has been! Essentially that is his secret for success.
