Importance of `non-academic reading'

`Sustained silent reading' discussed at Visakha Valley's NIE programme

VISAKHAPATNAM : The method of learning words and gathering information from the newspaper was taught to the students of Visakha Valley School during The Hindu's Newspaper in Education (NIE) programme. The concept of `sustained silent reading' was elaborately discussed.

The students were asked to read a news item and write new words. The excited students came up with interesting words and phrases. They discussed the meanings with their teachers during the class.

`Basis of good writing'

"Reading is the basis of good writing. And to be a skilful reader, you need to practice reading the newspaper and spend at least 10 to 15 minutes for non-academic reading," explained NIE resource person V. Anuradha.

Later, the students wholeheartedly participated in a short quiz on the history of The Hindu newspaper. With answers on their fingertips, they scored full marks for their knowledge.

They were also explained the importance of reading a newspaper and how it helps them in getting connected with the outside world.

"The students have bundles of energy and talent and that needs to be put into proper use in the right direction," said school principal Sharada Reddy.

Unique structuring

"Through the NIE classes, the young talents are nurtured and directed towards productive areas.

The classes are structured in a very unique way that helps the students even in their curriculum," she said.
