Baalu dedicates welfare works

Staff Reporter

``Parties should sink their differences"

TAMBARAM : The Union Minister for Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T. R. Baalu, on Monday, dedicated welfare works to the tune of Rs.1. 5 crore in Tambaram municipality. The works include overhead water tanks and sumps in different places and a new bitumen-topped MES Road at East Tambaram.

Mr. Baalu, also South Chennai MP, said political parties should sink their differences when it came to implementing welfare works for the people.

He said it was the foremost duty of elected representatives to be loyal to the people who had voted them and reminded people that they should have the courage to vote out those candidates who did nothing for their welfare. Tambaram MLA S. R. Raja and Municipal Chairman A. Janakiraman were also present.

Embarrassing moments

There were some embarrassing moments when Mr. Baalu was made to wait for long to turn on the tap to dedicate the overhead water tank at Krishna Nagar.

Though he unveiled the plaque, he was supposed to turn on the tap, but the valves from the tank were not opened even at the close of the function.

After waiting for about 10 minutes, Mr. Baalu rushed to the Chennai airport to leave for New Delhi.

Officials of the municipality had to face the ire of residents and elected representatives for not making the necessary arrangements.
