KOZHIKODE: Top seeds posted victories in the opening round of the Calicut FIDE rating all-India open chess tournament at the V.K. Krishna Menon Indoor Stadium here on Monday. No. 1 seed D.P. Singh, who represented India at the last Olympiad in Italy, beat R. Aparna with black pieces, second seed and local lad K. Ratnakaran defeated K. Arjun, third seed R.R. Laxman outwitted K. Athish and fourth seed G.N. Gopal overcame E. Athul. Nine rounds remain in this Swiss tournament. The results (first round): R. Aparna lost to D.P. Singh; K. Ratnakaran bt K. Arjun; K.
