College students told to banish ragging

KURNOOL: Kakarla Subba Rao, former director of NIIMS, has called upon students of professional colleges to banish ragging from their institutions. Addressing a function after inaugurating G. Pulla Reddy Dental College and Hospital on Monday, he said medical profession needed service with a heart. Evils like ragging were a blot on the profession.

He said rate of suicide in medical and other professional colleges was high, which indicated emotional imbalance among students. Pressure from parents, society and peers was the reason for many suicides, he said.

Need for introspection

Referring to the adverse reports about doctors in the press recently, he said it was time for the medical professionals to sit up and do some introspection. Dr. Subba Rao said able management, infrastructure, faculty and students were the four pillars of an educational institution in the private set up. Most of the institutions were able to create good infrastructure but failed to employ competent teaching staff, which reflected on the educational standards.

He called upon medical teachers to seriously take up research work, as without it the job of a teacher was incomplete. An ideal teacher should create curiosity in students and impart values relevant to the profession.

He complimented the management of GPR Dental College for establishing good infrastructure before starting the college. P. Ramachandra Reddy, former principal of Government Dental College, V.V. Subba Reddy, Principal of Dental College at Davanagere, G. Pulla Reddy, Chairman of Pulla Reddy group of Institutions, P. Subba Reddy, Secretary of the Trust, S.R.K. Reddy Principal of the newly-opened college and others were present.
