LUCKNOW: Tension prevailed in the Civil Lines area of Allahabad on Monday after a constable was killed in a bomb attack by a criminal during peak traffic hour. The police retaliated by gunning down one of the two criminals who had allegedly perpetrated the crime.

Elsewhere in the State, in Meerut, one person was killed following a clash between two shopkeepers. State Home Secretary R. M. Srivastava told newsmen here that the Allahabad incident took place during a traffic check by the police. He said two young men riding a motorcycle were stopped by a head constable and a constable for violating traffic rules. An altercation ensued between the young men and the constables following which one of the youths who was riding the pillion allegedly hurled a bomb at them. Mr. Srivastava said constable Ashok Pandey died on the spot. Not to be outdone, the police team present on the spot gave a hot chase to the duo and gunned down the criminal who was riding the pillion. The one who was riding the motorbike, however, escaped from the scene. The Home Secretary said that the police were conducting raids to nab him. The alleged criminal, identified by the police as Jitendra Kumar, is understood to have received pellet injuries. The body of the constable has been sent for post-mortem and bomb experts have been called to verify the intensity of the bomb.

Violence in Meerut erupted again on Monday after a clash between two furniture shopkeepers, Shah Alam, and Haroon and Mohammed Ismail. According to the Home Department spokesman, the clash followed a petty dispute over road building near their shops in Chappia Paith mohalla under the Lisari Gate police circle area. Mr. Srivastava said Shah Alam fired on the rival shopkeepers killing one Umar, while Ismail received pellet injuries. On getting the news of the incident, relatives of Umar and Ismail torched Shah Alam's shop. The injured Ismail has been admitted to Lokpriya Hospital in Meerut. Shah Alam is absconding.
