Forum plea on dam issue

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: Members of Tamil Desiya Munnani staged a demonstration here on Monday urging the Centre to direct the Kerala Government to allow its counterpart in Tamil Nadu to increase the height of the Periyar dam to 142 feet.

The protest was led by the munnani member, Maniarasan, and A. Anandan, organiser of the Mullaiperiyar Rights Retrieval Committee. The protestors wanted the Tamil Nadu Government to down all the 13 shutters of the dam to prevent surplussing of water to the Kerala side since the northeast monsoon would bring copious inflow into the reservoir. The Tamil Nadu police personnel should be deployed at the dam, they said.
