Dharmapuri: The crushing process at the Dharmapuri District Cooperative Sugar Mills at Palacode for 2006-07 would begin from October 27. At present, the crushing capacity of the mill was 2,000 tonnes per annum. The District Administration has sent a report to the State Government to install a cogeneration plant at an outlay of Rs. 60 crore in the mill to increase the crushing capacity from 2,000 tonnes to 2,500 tonnes per annum, said the Special Officer of Dharmapuri District Cooperative Sugar Mills, S. Mohan, here on Tuesday. More than 90 per cent of sugarcane cultivation in the mills cane growing area has now been covered under tissue culture, which is considered to be the highest in the country. Due to this the crushing capacity of the mill has increased. At present the electricity required for the process was generated from the mill itself. About 2.5 MW of electricity was generated through power turbine in the sugar mill.
Power generation
The cogeneration plant would generate steam for production of electricity as well as sugar processing. The steam would pass through a turbine, which would in turn generate electricity. About 15 MW of electricity would be generated per day through this method. Of this, five MW would be utilised for the sugar mill and the remaining would be sold to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. Along with this a proposal was sent to modernise the machineries in the mill at an estimate of Rs.12 crore. Plans are afoot to expand the crushing process in the mill, Mr. Mohan added.
