This Day That Age
Britain intends to grant the Gold Coast, in West Africa, independence within the Commonwealth on March 6, 1957, the Colonial Office announced in London on September 18. In a despatch to the Governor of the Gold Coast, Sir Charles Ardenclarke, Mr. Alan Lennox-Boyd, the Colonial Secretary, said the Government would take the first available opportunity to introduce in Parliament a Bill to accord independence to the Gold Coast. Britain had earlier this year promised the Gold Coast independence provided there was "a reasonable majority" in favour of it in the Gold Coast legislature after new elections. In the elections last July, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah's Convention People's Party won 72 out of 104 seats.
