dated September 20, 1956: Frederic Grubb dead

We regret to record the death, in London on September 17, of Mr. Frederic Grubb (87), eminent journalist, who was our London Correspondent from 1911 to 1934. Mr. Grubb took a keen interest in Indian affairs and in the Congress ever since its inception in 1885. He was personally known to most of the Congress pioneers like Surendranath Bannerjea, G. Subramania Aiyar, Motilal Nehru and Lajpatrai. He took part in the Madras session of the Congress in 1898. Mr. Grubb was interested in the abolition of liquor and was Secretary of the Anglo-Indian Temperance Association for more than 50 years. This brought him into contact with prominent Indian leaders. Through his despatches in The Hindu , characterised by clarity and depth of understanding, Mr. Grubb did yeoman service to journalism and to Indian nationalism.
