NEW DELHI : With over a year left for accomplishing the Bharat Nirman Programme's target of providing phones in 66,822 uncovered villages, 30,251 villages (45 per cent) have been connected till the end of August, according to official figures. Bharat Nirman aims to achieve cent per cent connectivity by the end of November next year. In Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Assam, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Himachal Pradesh over 50 per cent of the targeted villages have been provided with village public telephones (VPTs). However, connectivity is yet to be provided to 14,183 villages located in remote and inaccessible parts of the country. These villages are to be connected through digital satellite phone terminals (DSPTs). Assistance for capital and operational expenditure for these VPTs will be met from the Universal Services Obligation Fund.
