Kunnamangalam grama panchayat will soon ban plastic materials below 20 microns in thickness. The panchayat is all set to organise campaigns to create public awareness of the harmful effects of such materials. A meeting will also be held at the Kunnamangalam market on October 15 where a declaration to ban plastic materials will be made. Minister for Local Administration Paloli Mohammed Kutty will attend the function, says V. Anilkumar, chairman of the health and welfare standing committee of the panchayat. Kerala Plastics Manufacturers' Association says banning plastic materials will not solve the problem. A total ban is not feasible. The way out, they say, is to use quality plastic materials that are not harmful.
