The 20-odd students of the Irshadiya College, Feroke, are back home after a 10-day tour Chikandaya in Madhya Pradesh. It proved to be highly enlightening and a new experience for all of them. The student initiative was organised to express solidarity with the more than two-decade-old Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), led by social activist Medha Patkar. It was part of the college's effort to instil a sense of social commitment, and provide an opportunity to the students to experience the commitment generated through people's movements, college principal M.A. Sajid, said. The youth could freely interact with the Adivasis and farmers who have been affected by the dam. The students' rally from Kerala had started from Rajghat, in Badwani district in Madhya Pradesh, to participate in the monsoon hunger strike being conducted by the Narmada Bachao activists at Chikandaya. Those participating in the protest accorded a warm welcome to the students, for their support to the cause. A resolution was moved, expressing support to the movement. The students also contributed a sum of Rs.12, 000, which they had collected.
