Thiruvananthapuram
Even as efforts are on to set up a High Court Bench in the capital city, the State's first permanent Lok Adalat will start functioning from Thiruvananthapuram next week. The adalat, housed inside a rented building located near the Vanchiyoor Court Complex, will settle disputes relating to various services such as transport, electricity, post, telecommunication, water supply, sanitation, hospital and insurance that are inseparably intertwined with the lives of the people. As in the case of the existing adalats, which is held every second Saturday, the primary focus of the permanent adalat too would be to resolve a dispute through conciliation and compromise. However, the permanent adalat, like regular courts, will have the power to conduct trial in case a dispute is not settled amicably. There will also be no court fee. Minister for Law M. Vijayakumar will inaugurate the adalat at a function to be held at the VJT Hall on Saturday. The function will be attended by J.B. Koshy, Judge, Kerala High Court; D. Pappachan, district judge, among others. The Adalat will cater to the needs of people residing in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam and Pathanamthitta. Efforts are also on to establish a permanent Lok Adalat in Ernakulam and Kozhikode with the objective of achieving regional parity.
