Plea not to close down enforcement office

Staff Reporter

Thiruvananthapuram: Varkala Radhakrishnan, MP, has sought the intervention of Union Finance Minister P. Chidambaram to retain the office of the Assistant Director, Directorate of Enforcement, in the capital.

In a memorandum to the Union Minister in Delhi on Monday, Mr. Radhakrishnan pointed out the Department of Revenue under the Union Finance Ministry had issued orders on August 1 to close down the office that has been functioning over the last 36 years and having jurisdiction of eight districts, including Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu. The decision to close down the office will create unprecedented problems to the national security and interest,

Vantage point

Mr. Radhakrishnan said. He also pointed out the seizure of drugs from Thiruvananthapuram international airport, reported illegal foreign exchange transactions, close proximity to Colombo and Maldives and visit of hundreds of foreign tourists to Kovalam every year.

Taking into account the above facts, the CPI(M) leader said the Union Government issued orders on June 1 to designate the Principal Sessions Court in Thiruvananthapuram as the Special Court under the Prevention of Money Lending Act (PMLA) for the entire State.

The PMLA deals with the proceeds of the crime. The order to close the Sub-Zonal office will in no way be beneficial to the department, Mr. Radhakrishnan added.
