Man killed

TIRUNELVELI : A two-wheeler rider was fatally knocked down by a speeding lorry near Maaraanthai on the Tirunelveli-Tenkasi highway on Tuesday.

The police said the lorry proceeding from Tirunelveli to Tenkasi hit the bike near Maaraanthai, in which T. Rajendran (50) of Sivalingapuram under Alangulam police station limit was killed on the spot. The Alangulam police arrested the lorry driver, K. Rajendran (45) of Vijayawada.

Arrested for theft

TIRUNELVELI : The Palayamkottai Crime Branch police have arrested a youth for stealing bikes.

The police said S. Kuthbudeen (34) of Sankar Nagar was intercepted by a patrol team on Monday night.

During interrogation, he confessed that he had stolen two bikes, which were recovered. — Staff Reporter

Man killed in accident

ERODE: A man was killed when the car in which he was travelling collided with a lorry on the National Highway near Komarapalayam on Tuesday. The police said that the victim was yet to be identified. Another person who was travelling in the car has been admitted to a private hospital here.

Speeding bus kills man

ERODE: A speeding bus hit a man waiting at Kumilankuttai bus stop killing him.

The deceased have been identified as Thangaraj (45), a daily wage worker of Tiruchengode. He died at Erode Government Headquarters Hospital.

20 injured

ERODE: Traffic on the National Highway, near Vijayamangalam, was affected for an hour on Tuesday when a bus collided with a van. The van driver and 19 bus passengers were injured.

Demand for water

ERODE: More than 100 women on Tuesday staged a demonstration with empty pots in their hands on Manickkampalayam main road demanding the municipal administration to provide drinking water regularly to Wards 11 and 12 of the Periyasemur Grade-III Municipality.

They said that now they were getting water only once in six days. They said that the water supply should be made during daytime.

DMK candidate for by-poll

CHENNAI: S. S. Ghouse Basha is the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam's candidate for the Madurai Central Assembly constituency, the by-election for which is to be held next month.

DMK president M. Karunanidhi, who made the announcement in a party release on Tuesday, said Mr. Basha's candidature would be supported by constituents of the Democratic Progressive Alliance. — Special Correspondent

Secretariat staff body's assurance

CHENNAI: The general council of the Tamil Nadu Secretariat Association on Tuesday adopted a resolution assuring full cooperation to the State Government for implementing development and welfare schemes.

Moving the resolution, president of the association K. Pandurangan commended Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for restoring several rights and concessions of the employees withdrawn during the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam rule.

Members of the association would function as the brain and heart of the Government to ensure successful implementation of the schemes, he said. Another resolution said the Secretariat staff, from the level of record clerks to officers, would rally under one association instead of having department-wise unions, he said. — Special Correspondent

Ex-Minister's kin's house raided

Tuticorin: The Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption raided the house of Thilakan, a relative of ex-Minister Anitha R Radhakrishnan of AIADMK, at Thandupathu near Tiruchendur on Tuesday.

The raid, conducted by a team of DVAC officials led by Additional Superintendent of Police R Perumalsamy, started at 9 a.m. and lasted for an hour. DVAC sources claimed that some incriminating documents pertaining to the disproportionate wealth case registered against the former Minister recently were seized from the house. — Staff Reporter

Expo on aquaculture in January

Tuticorin: The Marine Products Exports Development Authority (MPEDA) will organise the third edition of `Indaqua,' an exhibition to highlight the aquaculture sector, in Chennai from January 11 to 13. N Chandrasekaran, Assistant Director, MPEDA, told mediapersons here on Tuesday, that the expo would focus on the present status and future prospects of ornamental fish exports.

Seafood processors, fish farmers, hatchery owners and machinery manufacturers from around the country are expected to participate in the expo to showcase their products. Nedumaran's plea on refugee camps

TIRUNELVELI: The Central and State Governments should take steps to handover the Sri Lankan refugee camps to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as it would improve their living conditions, president of Tamil Desiya Iyakkam Pazha. Nedumaran has suggested.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Mr. Nedumaran said Tamil refugees were living in pathetic conditions in camps across the State.

"Besides not allowing them to find a job outside the camp to feed their children, the Government has failed to establish adequate facilities there. So the UNHCR should be roped in to look after the Tamil refugees in the State," he said. — Staff Reporter

Election schedule

PERAMBALUR: Elections to the Perambalur and Ariyalur municipal councils will be held on October 13.

An official release issued here on Tuesday said the election to the Jayamkondam municipal council will be held on October 15.

Five panchayat unions — Perambalur, Veppanthattai, Ariyalur, Tirumanur and Sendurai and three town panchayats — Arumbavur, Poolampadi and Kurumablur — will go to polls on October 13.

Elections to five other panchayat unions — Veppur, Alathur, Jayamkondam, Andimadam and T. Pazhur, and three town panchayats — Udayarpalayam, Varadarajanpettai and Labbaikudikadu — will be held on October 15.

Man held for assault

PUDUKOTTAI: A. Ajis (40) was arrested for having allegedly attacked police personnel with some sharp weapons at Kattumaavadi village near Manamelkudi on Monday. Police said the incident occurred when inspector V. Ramachandran and head constable Nizam Mohideen went to the village to investigate a case. Ajis allegedly picked up a quarrel with the inspector before attacking him. The head constable who came to the rescue of the inspector also sustained injures. They were treated at the Government Hospital. Ajis was arrested. — Staff Reporter
