Mavoor Grama Panchayat Malinya Virudha Samiti threatens to launch stir On shifting of dumping ground

KOZHIKODE: The Mavoor Grama Panchayat Malinya Virudha Samiti has criticised the reported demand of Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy to shift the garbage dumping yard and solid waste treatment plant from Njelianparambu to Mavoor.

Talking to media persons here on Tuesday, president of the Mavoor grama panchayat and chairman of the samiti V. Balakrishnan Nair, its convener K.P. Rajashekharan and others said there was no doubt that should the trenching ground be shifted to Mavoor, the Chaliyar and the Cherupuzha would be polluted.

Also, the drinking water sources in Mavoor, Peruvayal, Perumanna, Olavanna areas, besides the surrounding regions of the Kozhikode Corporation, would be polluted too.

They threatened to launch a mass protest if the trenching ground was shifted here.

They described the reported statement of Mr. Chandy at a press conference here recently to shift the yard to Mavoor as `unfortunate'.

The samiti flayed the statement of the former Chief Minister at a juncture when steps were being initiated by the Government to set up new industrial units in Mavoor.

It appealed that the authorities ought under no circumstance allow the shifting of the trenching ground to Mavoor village with a population of around 30,000. It would cause grave health hazards to the people here, they said.

The samiti noted that the United Democratic Front Government and the Calicut Development Authority had identified 100 acres of land at Mavoor.

The Opposition Leader has now threatened to launch an agitation, if the garbage yard was not shifted to the identified site at Mavoor, it was added.
