Thiruvananthapuram: The Government, in accordance with the provisions of the Kerala Sports Act 2000, has reconstituted the Kerala Sports Council with the former Kozhikode Mayor, T.P. Dasan as president and former Kollam Mayor, K. Thankappan as vice-president.

The decision to reconstitute the KSC was taken by the Sports Minister, M.Vijayakumar, on Tuesday after consultation at various levels. The formal orders to this effect are likely to be issued on Wednesday, informed sources told The Hindu here.

The new council will have 23 members, besides Mr. Dasan and Mr. Thankappan (both of whom, incidentally had served as vice-president of the KSC in 1996-2001 and 1987-1991 respectively), including four senior level Government officials and three former internationals. The three former internationals nominated are P.T. Usha, M.D. Valsamma and I.M. Vijayan. Another notable inclusion is National shooting coach Dronacharya Sunny Thomas.

Besides, the new council will have the former BCCI secretary, S.K. Nair, M.M. Abdul Rehman (president, Kerala Olympic Association), K.T. Abdul Rehman (secretary, Kerala Volleyball Association), S. Rajiv (treasurer, Swimming Federation of India), Paul Aluvathingal (secretary, Kerala Athletics Association), K.M.I. Mather (president, Kerala Football Association), V.C. Hashim (secretary, Kerala Basketball Association), K. Sreekumar (Malappuram), K.S. Babu (Wayanad) and A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA, as members.

The list also includes V.Rajagopal (Deputy Editor, Mathurbhumi), A.N. Ravindradas (Sports Editor, Desabhimani), V. Gabriel (former Deputy Director (Sports), Education Department), P.I. Manoj (Asst. Professor, Physical Education, Kerala Agriculture University) and G. Bipin (Lecturer, K.T. College of Teacher Education, Arikkode).

The four Government officials who figure in the approved list are Principal Secretary (Sports), Principal Secretary (Finance- Expenditure), Director of Public Instruction and Director (Sports).

Mr. Dasan and Mr. Thankappan are likely to assume office on Wednesday.
