ALAPPUZHA: The second stage of the joint study on arthropod-borne viruses (arbovirus) and mosquitoes being taken up by the State Virology Institute, Alappuzha, and the National Institute of Virology, Pune, began here on Tuesday with a team of experts visiting the Muhamma, Kanjikkuzhy and Karthikappally areas in the district. The study of various viruses which cause outbreak of epidemics in Alappuzha and neighbouring districts assumes importance in the wake of outbreak of chikungunya in the district. State Virology Institute director Rajan Joseph Payyappally told The Hindu that the team collected blood samples from patients and took samples of mo squitoes. Mr. Payyappally said the study would help identify the various arbovirus found in people and in carrier mosquitoes.
