NCP invitation should not be rejected: YC(I)

Staff Reporter

`DIC(K) deserters were a liability'

  • 'Rank and file of the party still with Karunakaran'
  • `NCP recognises Karunakaran's importance'

KOLLAM: State president of the Youth Congress (Indira) Ibrahimkutty Kallar on Tuesday said the organisation would recognise any political decision taken by the leader of the Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran).

Mr. Ibrahimkutty said this at a press conference in the wake of the proposed merger between the DIC(K) and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

He said the decision in this regard was taken at an executive committee meeting of the Youth Congress (Indira). Of the 48 members in the committee, 43 attended the meeting and endorsed the decision. Those who left the DIC(K) had only been a liability for the party.

He alleged that they had forcefully taken the party into the United Democratic Front camp when the DIC(K) had decided to fight the elections alone. The recent move would help strengthen the party, he said. The rank and file of the party were hardcore Karunakaran loyalists.

He said the NCP was a mainstream political party which played a key role in national politics. Its invitation should not be rejected.

The NCP had extended the invitation as it recognised the importance of K. Karunakaran. If the CPI felt that aligning with Mr. Karunakaran would erode its prestige, then it should get its leader Pannian Ravindran to resign from the Lok Sabha seat, which had been won with the help of Mr. Karunakaran.
