TIRUCHI: The Tamil Nadu AITUC Construction Workers' Union has urged the State Government to take steps for setting up consultative committees comprising representatives of all the central trade unions in the districts to solve the problems of construction workers. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the State office-bearers meeting of the union held here on Thursday with the State president, N. Periasamy in the chair. The resolution welcomed the decision of the government to set up construction workers welfare board's offices in all the districts. Another resolution demanded the government to hike the compensation to the family members of the construction workers who were killed in accidents to Rs. 3 lakh and to those who suffered natural death to Rs. 1 lakh. The marriage assistance to the wards of the construction workers should also be increased to Rs. 15,000. Moreover the welfare board should bear the entire educational expenses of the children of the construction workers. The meeting demanded the government to provide a pension of Rs. 1,000 a month to all construction workers who had completed 60 years of age. The previous government had rejected more than 5,000 genuine applications for pension. The present regime should sympathetically consider all these applications and sanction pension. The union said the various programmes of the construction workers welfare board could be implemented only by collecting a one percent welfare cess as per the Construction Workers Welfare Fund Act. The government should issue a GO for the collection of one per cent cess from all the construction projects. It was decided at the meeting to hold a State-level agitation on October 10 to press the above demands. The union threatened to organise an agitation of laying siege to the Parliament on November 23 demanding the Centre to implement the Act for the construction workers all over the country. The general secretary of the State AITUC, S.S. Thiagarajan, the State general secretary of the Union, K. Ravi, and others spoke.
