External study courses being monitored

R. Sujatha

Rosemary Gosling

CHENNAI: Rosemary Gosling, director of External Study of the London School of Economics (LSE) was in Chennai recently to assess the students of the Stansfield School of Business, one of the centres offering the external study programme of the LSE.

Ms. Gosling was a student of LSE, and today about 16,000 students from across the world take courses designed by her. "LSE gave me a chance. Since 1979 I have been designing courses for this particular programme," she says. It was in 1858 that the university established an external system to offer programmes for students who could not come to the university to study. Today, the programme includes 34,000 students in over 180 countries.

The LSE monitors the colleges running its programmes by periodically checking on the students and their performance, and scrutinises the college's admission procedure when students fail, Ms. Gosling says. Tests are conducted by the British Council, and the degree is given by the University of London.

In November a team will visit Stansfield to evaluate the college's performance. It has been running LSE's courses for two years.

Ms. Gosling, who said the performance of Indian students under the external programme was `outstanding', presented prizes to a student Vidhi R. Lalchand, who passed the tough LSE tests with an aggregate of 77.2 per cent in the first year of her undergraduate honours course.
