Bid to make KCR withdraw resignation

Congress after TRS chief for not snapping ties with UPA

HYDERABAD: The Congress leadership is making last-ditch efforts to persuade Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K. Chandrasekhar Rao to withdraw his resignation from the Lok Sabha and abandon his plans to snap ties with the United Progressive Alliance.

Congress party sources said UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi had instructed State leaders to dissuade the TRS chief from leaving the alliance.

This view was strengthened further following indications about a meeting between Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao and APCC president K. Keshava Rao on Tuesday, a day ahead of the emergency meeting of the Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee in the wake of an unseemly spat between Congress MPs over Telangana.

Though the meeting was not held, Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao in an informal chat with reporters admitted that they had indeed planned a tete-a-tete. He made it clear that nothing short of conceding the demand for bifurcating the State would make him withdraw his resignation and continue the ties with UPA.

Asked about the possibility of TRS moving closer to the BJP after snapping ties with UPA, Mr. Chandrasekhar Rao quipped: "Enemy's enemy is a friend."

Former Minister A. Narendra said they would be meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on September 23 to inform him about Mr. Rao's decision to resign his Karimnagar Lok Sabha seat.

They would also meet President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam and submit a letter withdrawing their support to the UPA.
