Achuthanandan allays people's fears over power line

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan on Tuesday assured the groups protesting against the laying of the Koodankulam-Madakkathara 440-kV power line over their land that their grievances would be sorted out to their satisfaction.

He gave the assurance at a meeting of the representatives of various action groups protesting against the laying of the power line to bring electricity from the Koodankulam power project in Tamil Nadu to Madakkathara in Thrissur district. Ministers for Electricity, Revenue and Forest, top Government officials, and those of the Power Grid Corporation of India, the agency laying the power transmission line, also attended the meeting.

Electricity Minister A.K. Balan told the meeting that the line was crucial to Kerala since it could not do without its full share of electricity generated at Central power stations located in other States. He urged the Power Grid Corporation to conduct a study to determine whether the proposed line could not be laid without causing difficulties to the people.

The complaint was that the line passed over thickly populated areas or economically significant plantation areas.
