Special Correspondent
Thiruvananthapuram: Residents of the Thampanoor ward on Tuesday staged a hunger strike in protest against the failure of the City Corporation to repair the heavily-damaged roads in the area. Representatives of traders, tourist home owners, business establishments, and Government and private institutions participated in the sit-in, held at the Ayurveda College junction. Janata Dal leader Neelalohitadasan Nadar participated in the stir. The action council of residents alleged that the corporation turned a deaf ear to repeated pleas to repair Thyvila road and Kalpalayam road which were dug up two years ago to lay pipes for the Theerapadham water supply scheme. "While the Public Works Department (PWD) roads that were dug up for the project were repaired quickly, the corporation has failed to address the plight of the two roads under its jurisdiction. This is a mockery of local self-government," said action council leader P.T. Serafi. The local people alleged that the corporation failed to utilise the repair funds sanctioned by the Government. The heavily-potholed roads have led to a series of accidents, mostly involving two-wheelers. The action council has submitted a memorandum to Minister for Local Self-Government Paloli Mohammed Kutty and the Chief Minister's public grievance cell. Corporation secretary T.K. Raveendran said the repair work was tendered. The works contractor would be asked to expedite the repairs.
