KOCHI: The Kochi Corporation has decided to organise awareness campaigns against the spread of chikungunya. The civic body will observe dry day on September 24. Health workers, volunteers and NGO representatives will visit various divisions of the Corporation with the message for removing water from abandoned waste bins, bottles and cans that serve as the breeding ground of mosquitoes. This campaign will be carried out regularly, said Mayor Mercy Williams. Fogging has been found ineffective in containing the breeding of the mosquitoes that spread the disease, she said. A statement issued by the State chapter of the Indian Medical Association said the people need not fear as the fever could be treated if taken proper care. A person with suspected chikunguyna fever should immediately consult a doctor, said the statement. Aedes mosquito was the vector which spread the disease. It also spread dengue fever and yellow fever.
Main symptoms
The main symptoms of the fever were high fever, headache, vomiting, muscle pain and red rashes on the body. Persons with severe symptoms should be admitted to hospitals. The statement said that the only way to stop the spread of the disease was to make the environment mosquito-free.
