This Day That Age
Inaugurating the Southern Regional Conference of the representatives of Planning Forums at Trivandrum on September 19, the Rajpramukh of Travancore-Cochin said planning in India was different from planning attempted elsewhere in that "we have given the first and foremost place to the democratic way of life which we value so greatly and which we have embodied in our Constitution." He said a conference of this sort would not only facilitate exchange of ideas but also promote amity and fellow-feeling. The Five-Year Plans had become an integral part of our national life and it was essential that the whole community should consider deeply and understand problems connected with them. The Union Minister for Planning, Mr. G.L. Nanda, addressing the conference, said that behind all work that the Planning Forums might be doing, there was something which was much more significant, namely, social and political factors that shaped and determined the Second Five-Year Plan which they had to take into account. Students and professors could bring to bear a dispassionate approach to the numerous problems of the country and if the Planning Forums could help bring about a new outlook, a new appreciation and enthusiasm, a constructive piece of work would be done.
