13 killed in West Bengal floods

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: At least 13 persons were killed and nearly 50 injured as severe cyclonic storms hit the southern parts of West Bengal bringing with them heavy thunder-showers on Tuesday night and early on Wednesday.

An alert was sounded in coastal areas following forecast of heavy rain for the next 48 hours.

The death toll could increase with the arrival of reports from far-flung areas, officials said.

Ten blocks in the South 24 Parganas district in the Sunderbans areas were the worst affected.

Hundreds of families were rendered homeless.

The Government sanctioned Rs. 4.5 crore for relief and rehabilitation in the affected areas of the two districts, Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta said.

The situation was reviewed at a meeting of Ministers of the departments concerned.

The storm was caused by the formation of a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay, according to the Meteorological Department.
