Port workers stage rally

Staff Correspondent

Karwar: Karwar Dock and General Workers' Union staged a rally at the port here on Wednesday in protest against the entry of workers from another union to take up loading and unloading activity. Nearly 250 port workers participated in the rally.

Shubhalata Asnotikar, MLC and president of Karwar Dock and Port Contract Labourers' Cooperative Society Limited, Ganapati Ulvekar, president of the standing committee of Karwar Municipal Council and also president of the Karwar Dock and General Workers' Union, and Anand Asnotikar, labour leader, addressed the rally and stressed the need for workers to maintain unity.

Ganesh Shipping Agency, a private company, is said to have given a contract to load and unload cargo at the Karwar Port to Sea Bird Naval project-affected farmers and labourers cooperative society limited.

Shubhalata Asnotikar, talking to presspersons after the rally, said the Karwar Dock and General Workers Union, which had over 600 members, had been functioning at the port since 1992. Allowing one more union to function at the port at this stage might lead to unnecessary rivalry among the workers. Moreover, the strength of labourers at the port was sufficient to handle the work.

She said there was a stay order against the entry of workers from elsewhere to the port.
